Recently in conversation with a couple artist friends the subject of dealing with critics came up, again. Of all the people on earth artists are the most...."sensitive". Somehow a bunch of plumbers having a beer and crying that their customers don't appreciate how hard they work and blah blah seems silly, but artists....oh boy,pass the tissues. Lots of artists have anxiety attacks if someone watches them work, a know a few that even lock their studio door when they paint.
Outsiders, folk artists....(use your own label) are much different. Come on....look at what we do, any outsider that has been doing art for more than a week has critics. But unlike what I call "fine" artists the outsiders I have met just laugh at their critics and tell stories about it. This is a happy bunch. If you ever have the chance to visit the Kentuck Festival in Northport Alabama you will see what I mean ... this show is like a convention of outsiders. Walk around and talk to few of the artists, you will soon realize not only is the art different, but the artists are different. They are happy people and if you ask most will tell you they are delighted to do what they do.
I have had a version of this sign in every shop and studio I have worked in for many years. It keeps conversation with visitors proper and polite.

I need to quit watching the news…..I mean how much can an old guy take? Last week the world is going to come to an end, for some rapture or something, and then at the last moment it gets canceled. Then, just as I start to relax I tune in and they are saying Sarah Palin is going to run for president. Oh boy ….. Here we go… Drill Baby Drill.
Palin in the White House…..Does that mean we get the daughter and all the guns or ???? What happens if she gets a better offer from Fox News and quits half way through her term…..would her dancing daughter take over? I guess I wouldn’t mind so much except that Sarah is as dumb as a pizza. She may be the only politician on the planet that is dumber than Rick Santorum and YIKES ! he is running.

Well, we are still here…I saw in the news the world was going to end today but I think it was delayed or something as I’m here in Mohnton bashing away on my keyboard and Big Dutch is working overtime in the mill making steel.

Machine #21 finally finished.
I started working on this machine while I was in Florida and have finally gotten around to finishing it. This is an all purpose unit sending and receiving positive energy and also protecting from the ill winds than blow through our life from time to time.
The lights are a string of mini lights, easily replaceable. I expect the lights will last a couple years but you never know. However the piece is made so the lights can be removed and replaced with a new string without any trouble. You could easily use another color for a completely different look

Local folks have been wearing Big Dutch’s jewelry for years. Not a regular item for Dutch but from time to time he gets the urge and bashes and burns a few pieces together.

I guess you could call this art at the point of a gun. Gunfire has been distracting artists for years and Big Dutch and Wm. B. are no exception. The welcome sign is by Wm.B., the “Gun Show” and “Snitchin” are by Big Dutch.
There is so much shooting going on the “Wild West” of the old days seem not so wild after all. Local TV news shows each morning give a quick rundown of the shootings and killings overnight and then spend the rest of the half hour reporting the weather and traffic. A few weeks ago nine young people were shot at a club in Philadelphia., two died. There has been nothing in the news of incident since. Lead flying everywhere…no big deal.
